Directed for NorthEast theatre Ensemble, Krysta’s Streetcar was performed in the sultry, sweltering summer heat of the Albany Distilling Company’s courtyard in summer 2019. The production explored the enduring resonance of the story due to its treatment of manipulation and victimization- Blanche Dubois is alternately the victim and the homewrecker, the ‘faded, shattered daughter of the South,’ (Ward Morehouse) and a representation of ‘a long line of decadent Southern aristocrats’ (Richard Watts). Blanche lies to others because she cannot keep from lying to herself- she rejects the reality of what she is and the world she lives in, retreating into a fantasy world. Blanche demonstrates the danger of letting the dream world replace the real one- the real world has the power to destroy the fantasy, as well as the person wrapped up in it.
